Bleeding gums: a sign worth checking
Why recurring bleeding deserves attention, and how cleaning and examination support gum health.
Signs you may notice
Bleeding during brushing, redness, swelling and persistent bad breath deserve a dental check. Gum disease can also involve sensitivity, receding gums or loose teeth. One symptom alone does not establish a diagnosis or its severity.
Why does tartar matter?
Plaque is a bacterial film on teeth that can harden into tartar if it is not removed. Hardened tartar requires professional cleaning; a toothbrush cannot remove it. Continuing inflammation may affect the tissues and bone supporting the teeth.
What should you do?
Keep cleaning gently and consistently, including between the teeth, and arrange a visit to investigate recurring bleeding. Treatment depends on examination findings and may include improving home care, professional cleaning or deeper treatment when needed. Avoiding tobacco supports gum health and healing.
Severely painful, swollen gums or loosening teeth call for urgent assessment. Tell your dentist about diabetes, smoking and changes in your health because these can influence the follow-up plan.
